What Actually Happens in Your First Therapy Session?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. For many people, it's not the idea of talking that's daunting – it's the uncertainty. What will happen? What will I be asked? What if I don't know what to say? These are all completely normal questions, and if you've been wondering what to expect, you're certainly not alone.

The good news is that your first therapy session isn't about having all the answers or sharing your deepest thoughts straight away. It's simply the beginning of getting to know your therapist and exploring what has brought you to counselling.

Before You Begin

At The Wellbeing Therapy Hut, your journey starts a little differently.

Before you're matched with a counsellor, you'll first have an assessment. This isn't a therapy session in the traditional sense. Instead, it's an opportunity for us to understand your needs, what you're hoping to gain from counselling, and any preferences you may have. This helps us allocate you to the counsellor who is best suited to support you and the sessions will begin properly after that.

Finding the right therapeutic match is incredibly important, and we want to give you the best possible start.

It's a Conversation, Not an Interview

One of the biggest misconceptions about therapy is that you'll be expected to answer lots of difficult questions or immediately open up about everything that's ever happened to you. In reality, your first session is simply a conversation.

Your therapist will gently guide the discussion, helping you feel comfortable at your own pace. You can share as much or as little as you feel ready to. There is no expectation to tell your entire life story in one session. Many people spend the first session talking about what's happening in their lives right now and what prompted them to seek support.

You'll Talk About What's Brought You to Therapy

Everyone comes to therapy for different reasons. You might be experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, grief, trauma, low self-esteem, or simply feeling overwhelmed by life. Equally, you may not have a clear reason at all, perhaps you just know that something doesn't feel quite right. Whatever has brought you here is valid.

Your therapist may ask questions to better understand your experiences, but these aren't designed to catch you out. They're simply there to help build a picture of what's going on so that your sessions can be tailored to your needs.

You'll Discuss Your Goals

Not everyone starts therapy with a clear goal in mind, and that's perfectly okay.

Some people know exactly what they want to work on, while others simply want to feel happier, calmer or more like themselves again. Together, you and your therapist can explore what you'd like to achieve. These goals can change over time as therapy progresses, and there is no pressure to have everything figured out from day one.

You'll Learn About Confidentiality

A common worry for people starting therapy is whether what they say will remain private.

Your therapist will explain confidentiality at the beginning of your work together, including the very limited situations where they may need to share information if there are serious concerns about someone's safety. This conversation is there to help you feel safe and informed, so don't hesitate to ask questions if you're unsure about anything.

There Is No Right or Wrong Way to Feel

It's completely normal to experience a mixture of emotions during your first session.

Some people feel relieved after finally saying things out loud. Others feel emotional, nervous, hopeful, exhausted or even uncertain. You might cry. You might laugh. You might not know how you feel at all.

All of these responses are normal.

Therapy isn't about performing or getting it "right". It's about having a safe, non-judgemental space where you can simply be yourself.

What If You Don't Know What to Say?

This is probably one of the most common worries people have before starting counselling. The truth is, you don't need to arrive with a script. Therapists are trained to gently guide conversations and help you explore your thoughts and feelings. If you're struggling to find the words, that's okay too. Sometimes simply saying, "I don't know where to start," is the perfect place to begin.

Building Trust Takes Time

The first session is only the beginning. Just like any new relationship, trust develops over time. You don't have to share everything immediately, and your therapist won't expect you to. The aim is to create a supportive relationship where you feel comfortable enough to explore what's important to you at a pace that feels manageable.

Taking the First Step

Starting therapy can feel daunting, but it can also be one of the kindest things you do for yourself. You don't need to wait until you're in crisis or have everything figured out before reaching out for support. Whether you're navigating anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, grief, low mood or simply want to understand yourself better, therapy offers a space to explore whatever you're carrying.

Ready to Get Started?

At The Wellbeing Therapy Hut, we begin with an assessment rather than jumping straight into regular counselling sessions. This allows us to get to know you, understand what you're looking for, and carefully match you with the counsellor who best suits your individual needs and goals.

If you're thinking about starting therapy, we'd love to help you take that first step.
